Genko (a Buddhist priest) (源光 (僧侶))

Genko (year of birth and death unknown) was a Buddhist priest of the Tendai sect who lived in the end of the Heian period. He called himself also Jihobo. He was a scholar monk in Saitokitadani of Mt. Hiei and it is known that Honen at the age of 13 first studied under him. It is also said that he found the ability of young Honen and realized that he could not teach any more then he sent Honen to Koen, as known as Kotokuin Ajari. It is told that 'Genku' the hoi (given name to a Buddhist priest) of Honen was named after "Gen" of Genko and "Ku" of Eiku.
